Description

Starting Out in Teaching (Modules 3 & 4) is designed to support early-career teachers in developing the practical skills required to create productive, inclusive, and well-managed learning environments. The programme places a particular emphasis on behaviour management and the establishment of positive classroom cultures that enable all students to succeed.

Participants will explore the key principles of effective classroom management, including the establishment of routines, expectations, and consistent responses to student behaviour. The training examines how teachers can create a climate of mutual respect, build positive relationships with students, and encourage high standards of behaviour through proactive rather than reactive approaches.

The programme introduces a range of evidence-informed behaviour management strategies, focusing on prevention, de-escalation, and the effective handling of low-level disruption. Participants will consider the impact of teacher presence, communication, classroom organisation, and consistency on student behaviour and engagement.

The course also addresses the importance of understanding student needs and recognising factors that may influence behaviour in the classroom. Participants will explore inclusive approaches that support diverse learners while maintaining high expectations for all students.

Alongside behaviour management, the training develops participants' ability to engage learners through effective teaching practices, purposeful questioning, and ongoing assessment. The role of feedback and classroom interactions in supporting both learning and behaviour will be examined.

A further focus of the programme is professional reflection and development. Participants will analyse classroom scenarios, discuss practical challenges, and reflect on their own experiences in order to strengthen their confidence and effectiveness as teachers.

Through collaborative activities, case studies, and guided reflection, participants will develop a toolkit of strategies that can be applied immediately in their own educational settings.

By the end of the programme, participants will be better equipped to establish positive classroom environments, manage behaviour confidently and consistently, and support student learning through effective professional practice.

Objectifs de la formation

At the end of the training, participants will be able to establish and maintain a positive learning environment through effective behaviour management strategies.

They will understand how to set clear expectations, routines, and boundaries that promote student engagement and accountability.

Participants will develop techniques for preventing and responding to low-level disruption while maintaining positive relationships with students.

They will learn how to foster a respectful and inclusive classroom culture that supports learning for all students.

The training will also develop participants' confidence in using effective communication, restorative approaches, and behaviour interventions when appropriate.

Finally, participants will reflect on their own professional practice and identify strategies for continuous improvement as classroom practitioners.
